The history of the United States stock exchange dates back to the 18th century, when a stock trader named Alexander Hamilton helped establish the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in 1792. The NYSE became the first stock exchange in the United States and served as the central trading hub for shares of major and renowned American companies such as General Electric, Coca-Cola, and IBM.

Initially, stock trading was conducted directly under a tree on Wall Street. Later, in 1817, chalkboards were used to record stock prices and facilitate trading among stockbrokers. In 1867, the NYSE introduced stock price quotations printed by a machine known as the "ticker tape", which allowed traders to follow stock price movements in real time.

In 1971, NASDAQ was launched as an electronic stock exchange offering automated stock trading and providing a trading platform for technology and information services stocks. Over the following decades, NASDAQ became the preferred exchange for emerging technology companies such as Microsoft, Apple, and Amazon.

The American Stock Exchange (AMEX) began as an informal stock market in 1842. Known as the New York Curb Market Agency, it started as a place where traders could buy and sell stocks and commodities not listed on the NYSE. It was also known as the "Curb Exchange" because trading would take place on the kerb outside the NYSE building. In 1921, it was renamed the American Stock Exchange. AMEX was known for trading shares of smaller companies not yet listed on the NYSE.
In 2007, NYSE acquired AMEX and merged the two stock exchanges. At that point, NYSE became the largest stock exchange in the world.
The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) was established in 1792 through the Buttonwood Agreement. It began as an informal trading venue under a buttonwood tree on Wall Street, New York, before growing into the largest stock exchange in the world.
NYSE is the oldest and largest stock exchange, listing major corporations. NASDAQ was founded in 1971 as the first electronic exchange and is renowned for technology companies. AMEX focused on small and mid-cap companies before being merged with NYSE in 2007.
